"Hand Sculptures" -Students of CS#1 - Grades K-3

For "Hand Sculptures"  the students learn:
  • to control and create a shape with their hands,
  • to connect with a partner's hand and maintain a light touch,
  • and identify and sequence the correct order of movement or events.

"Hand Sculptures" develop the students: 
  • observation skills,
  • ability to work together in a cooperative fashion,
  • and engages their imagination and creative skills.

"Follow the Leader", Students of CS#1, Grades 4-6, November 2010

In "Follow the Leader" the students learn:
  • the art of leading and following, 
  • they explore various locomotor skills, 
  • they invent and experiment with creating new ways of moving,
  • they develop their sense of personal and general space.

 "Follow the Leader" develops the students: 
  • observation skills,
  • ability to work together in a cooperative fashion,
  • and physical coordination.


"Words in Motion" -Students of CS#1 - Grades K-2

In this lesson the students create choreography based on the poem, "A Writing Kind of Day", by Ralph Fletcher. They learn:
  • Characteristics of Free-Verse Poetry
  • The Dance Concepts of Shape, Level, Moving in Place, Moving through Shared Space, and
  • Explore Meaning of the Poem Through Dance

Performing dance movements for the poem:

  • Reinforces the concepts articulated in the poem, 
  • Adds another layer of understanding and meaning to the poem, and 
  • Requires the students to memorize the sequence of movements with the poem.



"Snake" - Students of CS#1 - Grades 3-6

In this lesson the students created choreography based on a poem they wrote entitled "Snake".They learn
  • Characteristics of Free-Verse Poetry
  • The Dance Concepts of Shape, Level, Moving in Place, Moving through Shared Space, and
  • Explore Meaning of the Poem Through Dance

Performing dance movements for the poem:
  • Reinforces the concepts articulated in the poem,
  • Requires the students to memorize the sequence of movements with the poem.

Reciting the poem:​
  • Reinforces the concept of Prosody or how the poem is spoken and adds another layer of understanding and meaning to the poem, 

Choosing the music for the poem​:
  • Creates another level of understanding and generates additional critical thinking.
